erk

There are some things in life that one can safely miss. This is one.  More similar food excellence by navigating.

Fish "tacos".. Are they not really tacos? Or ... tacos, nudge nudge wink wink

My local supermarket has a free advert board like this. It is used by that odd group of people who use quote marks for emphasis.

thus

Mazda 626 registered till "June 06"                  Presumably the June 06 is because they edited the June 01 rego sticker carefully with a marker pen?

But my favourite is written in that little-old-lady handwriting and just reads                "Massage" table

when things hurt

When things hurt, the scientist in some of us looks for a pain scale

Without going into the old "how do we tell if sensation is linear or logarithmic" debate, here is one such scale

thinking and language

Can one think without language? Does it depend on our definition of thinking? Or of language? Or is it our defn of thinking and language?

As always one can get an idea of the shape of things by looking at their edges. Such as how deaf peope think

This article tries to take this approach.

These are good problems to argue in bed, I expect.

today's Bible quote brought to you by infanticide, murder and exploitation

I have had just about enough of the Bible quotes from people who can't think for themselves. Really, it serves no purpose except to irritate me and make you look like a fool. Yes, You. With the long hair.

Here is one in return. It is Psalm 137:9.

It comes only a few lines after Psalm 137:1, which is used in a few spiritual songs and runs "By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down and wept, when we remembered Zion"

But 8 verses later we have:

Psalm 137:9.   "How blessed will be the one who seizes and dashes your little ones against the rock."  Lovely?

Please don't bother me again with quotes from sources as inconsistent as this. Just go visit here instead, and use your brain. I assume that to be possible despite the evidence to the contrary.

unusual Apollo 12 flight manual pages

Apollo 12 astronauts had a small book of flight procedures in a "cuff checklist" book. The book included a couple of ... unexpected ... images

For example this and this.  The entire book is also on the NASA site at http://www.hq.nasa.gov/office/pao/History/alsj/a12/cuff12.html

clever, pointless

In this image, there is the complete script of a film. Pulp Fiction, in fact (the source of the obligatory poster in all arts student share houses)

how many or how much

(colour slowly returning)

[ the number or the amount? ]

"To understand the two different modes of evaluating amounts, imagine picking the shortest checkout line at the grocery store. You could count the number of shoppers in each, in which case you'd be thinking discretely, in terms of numerosity. However, if you were a hurried shopper, you would probably take a quick glance over each line and pick the one that seemed the shortest, thinking in terms of continuous quantity."

A study by neuroscientists at University College London and Caltech has dentified the region of the brain active in performing basic mathematical concepts such as counting and arithmetic.  It also explains how our minds differentiate between "how many" objects we see or "how much" of something is in a particular space.

the number of students or the amount of students?
